Friday Favorites: You're Next

Back in 2008, Bryan Bertino's The Strangers started a niche trend in horror: the home invasion thriller. Bertino's creepy yet subtle approach made the film stylishly effective in keeping audiences suspended in fear. Since then, the home invasion category has seen a quite a few entries, albeit straight to DVD in some cases. I could sit here and list titles but of my favorite thrillers of all time has the spotlight for this Friday's favorite, You're Next.
On the surface, You're Next hits all the marks of your basic home invasion thriller: unsuspecting family with petty drama, isolated location and creepers in masks. It's not until halfway in to the film you realize that this movie puts an interesting and ingenious twist on the typical intruder story. Writer/director duo Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett have a good track record of adding a gritty and fun spin on their projects, so naturally, I have been a fan of their work since this theatrical debut. The trailer and promotional campaign promises both tension and action which can be a hard ratio to balance for a lot of filmmakers but in many ways, this is an area where the movie excels. The tense moments had me on the edge of my seat and the action scenes had my adrenaline pumping as I cheered on our group of unsuspecting house guests. Wingard and Barrett really went into this project knowing exactly what kind of story they wanted to tell and they did it wonderfully. Instead of the "hide and seek" or "cat and mouse" tactic that we typically see in slasher or home invasion movies, they focused more on the "hunt or be hunted" mindset. Playing with this idea and having fun with the approach, makes this film a roller coaster ride of quiet suspense and intense action. The bad guys are menacing with an almost tactical aesthetic, you never feel that they are just psychopaths running rampant on the street, but a mini-militia of hunters on the prowl. They are capable of very bad things and the audience is made well aware of this early on. The film pulls no punches in the death department and even though some moments can be a bit over the top, it all works somehow in the context of this movie. It's as if they knew the first quarter built up to a point where the audience would be disappointed if it wasn't a bit exaggerated. They also throw in a some dark humor to really give the feel that this movie, while not a comedy, doesn't take itself so seriously that it can't be fun which is exactly what You're Next is. If you haven't had a chance to see this movie, I highly recommend that you don't miss out on this one. With laughs, scares and a perfect blend of nail biting suspense and gritty action, this should be "next" on everyone's watch list.

  1. Your review for this gem of a movie is so spot on. It really was a cool twist on the typical killer on the loose movie. The fact that the killers weren't just psychopaths running around, but, instead had a plan and knew what they were going to do, made it so much more unsettling. This is hands down one of my favorite movies, thank you for highlighting the reasons why it's so good!

Saturday Night In: Creep

You know those people that are nice to an uncomfortable extent? The type that get a little too comfortable with strangers too fast? Sure they might be a little odd and have a strange sense of humor but they're probably harmless... most of the time.           Creep is the dark, and strange story of one such man (played a little too well by Mark Duplass) who puts an ad in the paper looking for a videographer to film a day in his life. He slowly reveals that that he has been diagnosed with cancer and has only months left to live. He wants to document a personal day in the life so that his unborn son has a video of his father to watch and grow up with. It's a touching premise but things don't stay sweet for very long as the day goes on. Things go from uncomfortable to creepy as the things our protagonist reluctantly agrees to film get stranger.           Duplass does a great job taking the story from ...

Gaming News: Popular horror game "Dead by Daylight" to receive big new update in June.

Hot on the heels of it's two year anniversary, Behaviour Studios' popular online horror game is getting ready for a big new update to celebrate. This new update will include some changes to the game's mechanics but what has fans buzzing most is that developers have announced that a new chapter will be included in this update. For those who don't know, a new chapter includes a new killer, survivor, map and all the lore that comes with it. Behaviour has remained tight lipped about this new chapter but they did tease it at PAX north in Boston recently by handing out cards showing a piece of the new killer (shown above). This chapter will be different from previous chapters in that with it's release, new cosmetics will be available following the theme of this chapter for all unlicensed survivors. The new killer seems to have a carnival aesthetic which is also something different for Dead by Daylight as the previous (unlicensed) chapters have been centered more to...

Friday Favorites: The Thing (1982)

An isolated and frozen outpost, an armed and cranky crew of scientists and a shape shifting alien that can assume the look of any living being it wants. If that doesn't convince you that The Thing is a "must see" for any sci-fi/horror fan then allow me to also add that it is helmed by legendary director, John Carpenter and stars a young and scared Kurt Russel as the iconic protagonist, R.J. MacReady.           The story opens to an areal shot of a Husky running quickly though the snow and dodging bullets coming from a helicopter flying overhead. The dog quickly makes it to an outpost full of scientists who have been there way too long for their liking. As the story advances we begin to find out that the crew may have found themselves in a bit of a pickle (rather the pickle has found them) when they discover that another outpost miles away has been completely deserted and trashed. As the crew tries to find out what could've ...
